WCTE to sponsor night of classic opera

Local PBS subsidiary WCTE will sponsor a screening of “Great Performances at the Met: The Metropolitan Opera’s Opening Night Gala” featuring world-renowned soloist Renée Fleming from 3-5 p.m. on March 7 in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts building.”This screening will be in support of our March pledge drive,” WCTE representative Mark Dudney said, “WCTE is a public television station, so it depends on support from the community to stay on the air.”

The screening features soprano vocalist Renée Fleming performing pieces by classical composers. Verdi’s La Traviata, Massenet’s Mano and Richard Strauss’s Caprico are the featured pieces. Tenor Ramon Vargas, baritones Thomas Hampson and Dwayne Croft and Bass Robert Lloyd perform alongside Fleming in the performance.

WCTE will be shooting footage of the screening that will air the following night, March 8 along with the performance.

“Our crew will be filming those at the screening, so everyone that attends will have a chance to be on TV,” Dudney said.

Tickets will be sold for $5 at the door, and a brief reception will take place after the screening.
