Contemporary collection comes to Drama Center

The Backstage Theater series presents an evening of ten-minute plays that will soon be open to the public at the Cookeville Drama Center. The production, “8 X 10”, includes eight plays performed by more than 25 actors and actresses. The pieces performed will be “Good-bye Howard,” “Sure Thing,” “The Office,” “Downtown,” “Quiet Torrential Sound,” “Claire de Lune,” “Apres Opera,” and “Two Truths and a Lie.”

“I always try to attend every Backstage production,” Senior Christine Plant said. “It’s a completely different experience than any other play I’ve ever been to. You’re on the stage with the actors. You’re close enough to feel a part of going on instead of just an onlooker out in the audience.”

The Cookeville Drama Center is known for its youth-appealing Children’s Theater plays, but the Backstage Theater gains national recognition for its contemporary productions.

According to the Drama Center website, “Playgoers are seated on stage where the action is. near enough to hear every word, every sigh. to see every comical expression and gesture. to feel part of every scene.”

The Drama Center Backstage offers four productions each season. Directors spice up each Backstage experience by arranging audience seating to accompany the play. However, the seating always remains on stage to appeal to the backstage feel.

The “8 X 10” production begins at 7:30 p.m. on March 20, 21, 24, 26, 27, 28 at the Cookeville Drama Center. For more information call (931) 528-1313.
