Women’s season ends in first round of OVC tourney

The women’s basketball season ended Tuesday for Tech in Charleston, Illinois. The women were defeated in first round action of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament ending a late season run by the Golden Eagles. Down by as many as 16 early in the contest, the Golden Eagles refused to submit in front of a hostile crowd in EIU’s Lantz Arena. They clawed and scratched their way to a 61-60 game with 4:30 remaining. A 10-5 run by EIU ended Tech’s hope for a dramatic come from behind road victory. The final was 71-65.

Seniors, Meagan Lyons and Blair Bowens, paced the Golden Eagles with 17 and 15 points respectively in their final game wearing purple and gold.

“We fought,” Coach Amy Brown said. “These kids gave it all they could tonight and I am very proud of our effort.”

February, was a great month for the women’s basketball team, as they posted a 5-2 record. The ladies also earned the seventh seed in the OVC tournament and placed Tech among women’s basketball elite with the school’s 700th victory.

“I can’t say enough about our seniors. They were warriors, Brown said.”

The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 9-21 overall record, 7-11 in conference play. Tech joined Tennessee, Old dominion, Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin, James Madison, and Texas as the only women’s programs with 700 victories.
