Softball travels to face SIU-E

To finish off the week, the Tech softball team travels to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for a three game series.Tomorrow will mark the first time that the Golden Eagles have met the Cougars since 2009, in which the Cougars snagged wins for all three games played.

“It was one of our first games of my freshman year,” said Pre-Medicine junior Whitney Cummings. “The thing that I remember the most is that they could hit well and thinking that, when they became a part of our conference, there would be some good offensive games.”

SIU Edwardsville is new to the Ohio Valley Conference and is a very good contender for the conference championship. When a team enters a new conference, the school is allowed to exploit one of their teams for a conference championship. The Cougars picked their softball team to be eligible.

“We want to go out and win every game,” Cummings said, “but there is always the thought in the back of your head that the ‘newbe’ can’t come in and show up.”

Tech is coming off a series loss against Eastern Illinois, when Tech lost the first game 3-1 in 14 innings. After that game, which lasted almost four hours, Tech bounced back to win the second game of the doubleheader, 2-0. Tech fell in the rubber match, however, 6-4.

Tech softball played Thursday at home against rival Jacksonville State University, but that score was not available at press time.

The games are scheduled to begin with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The third game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Sunday.
