Women’s golf battles back and wins Bobby Nichols invitational

The Golden Eagle women’s golf team hosted and won the inaugural Bobby Nichols invitational.on earlier this week on March 19.
Going into the second round the Golden Eagles women’s golf team trailed by just one stroke but would come back and defeat their OVC rival Murray State.
Tech finished with a collective 36-hole team total of 622.  The Racers who had a one-stroke lead at the end of the first finished the second round with a score of 624.
“Honestly, I think it was pretty divine,” said Coach Polk Brown. “I have a lot of faith and I feel like that Coach Nichols was definitely looking down on that event.”
The invitational was named after professional golfer and former Tech player Bobby Nichols, who was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior for Tech men’s golf team in the late 50’s early 60’s.  Nichols returned and coach the men’s team in 1979 and would later start the women’s golf team at Tech in1986.
“To beat Murray State and win that tournament for the first year was extremely special,” said Brown. “They played awesome.”
“This tournament this was the best we all played together,” said Senior Katherine Bell. “Usually we’ll have one of two players play good one day and then one or two the next day. At this one we had pretty good scores for both rounds.”
Freshman Madalyn Everts’ fourth place finish earned her an all-tournament spot and led the team as far as numbers are concerned.  Senior Katherine Bell and junior Amber Shepherd tied for seventh, freshman Megan Williamson tied for 23rd, senior Amanda Randolph tied for 54th.
“As a team we played well,” said Bell. “I’m proud of everybody.”
The women’s and men’s teams will be back in action on April 1 at the Pinehurst Challenge host by College of Charelston.
