The season is over for the Tennessee Tech soccer team, but two members are being recognized for their good play on the field. Senior midfielder Taylor Sutton and sophomore midfielder Lauren Brewer were both awarded Ohio Valley Conference All-Tournament team honors following the conference tournament.
Head coach Steve Springthorpe said both, Sutton and Brewer, played a big role on the team.
“Both Taylor and Lauren played to their potential and made an impact in the game,” Springthorpe said. “I think the selection really just capped off a fantastic season where they both played well and helped our team move in a positive direction.”
Coach Springthorpe had positive things to say about his senior player.
“Taylor has always been a leader on and off the field in many ways. I could always count on her being one of if not the most fit players on the team,” Springthorpe said. “She has always been a believer in the team. She has strived to be the best she can be and always wanted the team to be successful. This season she was instrumental in pushing our team forward. I am grateful for her dedication to our University and the team. We will miss her.”
Sutton says this was a great ending to her career at Tech.
“These last four years have been a roller coaster ride, but I wouldn't change that for a thing,” Sutton said. “I have met some incredible girls who have helped make me the person I am today. I wouldn't have wanted to end my four years any other way or with a different group of girls.”
Sophomore Lauren Brewer credits her teammates for her success.
“It’s such a humbling feeling,” Brewer said. “ I feel very fortunate and very grateful for achieving this award for sure, but I have to give all the credit to my teammates and coaches. They challenge me to be the best player I can be day in and day out and because of that, I give all the credit to them on helping me to receive this award.”
Coach Springthorpe is excited for Brewer’s future.
“Lauren has established herself as one of the best 1v1 defenders in our conference,” Springthorpe said. “It is unfortunate that she was not recognized on the All-OVC first or second team as I believe she deserved that distinction. Lauren has really worked hard the last year preparing herself both physically and mentally so she could be the best player she could be in order to help the team be more successful. I look forward to seeing Brew continue to improve in the off season and we look forward to her being a future leader on the team.”
Brewer says she has high expectations for next season.
“I know when I am saying this I am speaking for the whole team, that our goal for next season is to be number one in conference and just be better than we were this past season,” Brewer said. “We have come a long way in the past year and we are all just excited to see what this next fall will bring.”
