Men’s Golf:” The men’s team has really put out some solid rounds over the last events,” said head coach Polk Brown. “ We need to work on yardages inside 130 yards as well as managing our rounds when we don’t have our best stuff. If we can do these two things, we will find ourselves in better position to win more consistently. We have done a lot of good things so far, but we need to put 3 solid rounds together.”
The men’s golf team finished sixth at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Oct. 3 after a fourth-place finish on the first day of play. The team is scheduled to resume play at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 16.
Women’s Golf: “For the women’s team, we have had some good individual play,” said coach Polk Brown. “Our team as a whole needs to continue to improve on course management and get sharper around the greens. Continuing to work on these things will give us a better opportunity to be successful. We certainly have the ability to perform, but we need to sharpen up around the greens and keep improving on our decision making in stressful situations.”
The women’s golf team were consistent at the Starmount Forest Fall Classic, finishing in ninth place on both days of competition, Oct. 2 and 3.
Football: “It’s easy to go hide in our office, it’s easy to go hide in the locker room, it’s easy to just kind of try to stay unnoticed,” said head coach Marcus Satterfield after the 34-7 loss to Jacksonville State. “We have a platform now to show how our process works and how we react to adversity.” UPDATE: The Golden Eagles came within a few inches of victory against Eastern Illinois. Kicker Nick Madonia’s field goal with ten seconds left in the game went slightly to the right, resulting in TTU losing 24-23. (If Satterfield gave a post-game conference, they haven’t made it publicly available to pull a quote from yet.)
Tennis: Senior Eduardo Mena advanced to the second round of the ITA Men’s All-American championships after an Oct. 6 win over Josh Goodger of Tulsa. The reigning OVC Player of The Year then faced the number two ranked player in the nation, Nuno Borges of Mississippi State. UPDATE: Mena defeated the second-ranked Nuno Borges to advance to the round of 16, where he defeated Oklahoma State’s Julian Cash, the sixteenth-ranked player in the nation. Mena’s tournament came to
an end during the quarterfinals, as he was defeated in two straight sets by Thomas Laurent of the University of Oregon.
Soccer: (Game on Oct. 8) The TTU soccer team is preparing for the final games of the season, where they will be defending a five-game unbeaten streak (As of Oct. 7), with the streak staying alive with a scoreless tie on the road against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
The soccer team play their final three games at home on Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. against Morehead State, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.against Eastern Kentucky, and the season finale against UT Martin on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. The first round of the OVC Tournament is scheduled to begin Oct. 27.
After a winning weekend, senior Karigan Owens was named as the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week due to her vital role in the Sept. 29 win over Belmont and the Oct. 1 win over Austin Peay.
Men’s Cross Country: The men’s cross-country team finished in seventh place of the nine teams competing at the Sam Bell Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana Sept. 30. They are currently preparing for the Adidas Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky on Oct. 14.
Gilbert Boit was awarded his second OVC Male Runner of the Week honor of the 2017 season after winning the Sam Bell Invitational and helping the team to an overall finish of seventh place.
Women’s Cross Country: Women’s cross country finished seventeenth of thirty-two teams at the Sept. 23 Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. Like the men’s team, they are currently preparing for the Adidas Pre-Nationals on Oct. 14.
Volleyball: Tech volleyball fell to 3-15 and 1-5 in conference play Saturday with a 3 set sweep to instate rival Tennessee State. Tech is set to face Austin Peay (17-3, 5-1 OVC) Firday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and Murray State (12-6, 4-2 OVC) Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. Both are home contests.
