Professor with child pornography charges is on FBI watch list

Cookeville police are working with the FBI to locate a former Tech professor wanted on a child pornography charge.

Professor Omar Elkeelany, who taught computer engineering, is believed to have fled the United States after a Putnam County grand jury indicted him in October on a charge related to sexual exploitation of a minor.

Investigators found 100 images of child pornography on his office computer, officials said.

Elkeelany, formerly of Egypt, is on a federal watch list in case he attempts to re-enter the country, Cookeville Police Capt. said Bobby Anderson on Thursday.

Anderson said the investigation is still open.

Elkeelany resigned from his position as interim chair of the computer and electrical engineering department and took a leave of absence on Sept. 25, university spokesperson Dewayne Wright said previously.
