Women’s soccer recap

Tech women’s soccer team lost 2-0 against Eastern Illinois University in the first round of the OVC Tournament Nov. 1 in Edwardsville, Illinois at the Ralph Korte Stadium. The match concluded the Golden Eagle’s 2019 season 6-8-5.

 

Tech was registered as the fifth seed and EIU was registered as eighth. Despite having nine shots on goal compared to the Golden Eagle’s 16 shots, the Panthers had six saves while Tech had two saves. EIU scored one goal in the first half at the 32nd minute and one in the second half at the 57th minute. Kendall Powell had a quarter of the shots on the Panthers with four shots.

 

This isn’t the first time Tech played against EIU. On Oct. 18, the Panthers and the Golden Eagles tied 1-1 in double overtime.

 

EIU made it to the OVC quarterfinals against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Nov. 3 and lost 1-0 at Korte Stadium, ending their season 4-10-4 (four wins, 10 draws, four losses).

 

The semi-finals will be today. Second seed Murray State will face sixth seed Belmont at 3 p.m. and first seed Southeast Missouri will face fourth seed SIUE at 6:30 p.m.

 

The championship game will be Sunday, at 2 p.m. with whoever wins Friday’s matches.

 

“Obviously, we’re disappointed,” coach Steven Springthorpe said. “But at the end of the day the one that goes on is the one that’s able to put the ball in the back of the net, and we weren’t able to.”
