Tech officials added an event planning and management minor to the course catalog this semester.
Communication professor Dr. Colleen Mestayer noticed a surge of interest in event planning and after she successfully work-shopped the class last semester, the board of trustees approved it as an official minor.
“It is a practical minor that gives students real world experience in a growing field. The students get experience working on actual events, and this allows them to have another avenue to pursue when they graduate,” Mestayer said.
Event planning students are currently working for the Water Center and will be hosting two events this semester. The first event, a convention for cave enthusiasts, is scheduled for Feb. 29 in Bell Hall.
Allayna Martin, an event planning student, said, “Event planning is an awesome tool to have. Learning how to coordinate events will allow me to expand my skills and further my career down the road.”
Tech officials are continuing to expand the communication department and adding more majors and minors every year to keep up with ever changing career opportunities.
