Basket weaving artist to speak about exhibit

The Derryberry Art Gallery in the RUC is featuring the basket weaving art of Dorothy McGuinness this month.

The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day until April 4, showcasing a variety of different baskets McGuinness has made by hand.

Kimberly Winkle, assistant professor of art, said that McGuinness’ artwork shows interesting use of paper, color and form to create contemporary baskets but using traditional techniques.

McGuinness has been making baskets for 25 years and has featured her work in a variety of local, national, and international exhibitions. Her work combines traditional bamboo weaving techniques with paper techniques.

The art exhibit brochure said that the paper McGuinness uses in her weaving is hand-painted to bring color to her art and make it more contemporary.

There will be a reception and gallery talk hosted by McGuinness herself in the RUC April 4.

McGuinness will speak for 30 minutes about her work. Then, there will be a 10-15 minute question and answer session. A reception will follow the talk and question and answer session.

The McGuinness exhibit is currently open in the Derryberry Art Gallery in the RUC and will stay open until April 4. The exhibit is free and open to the public every day.
