Speech and debate team success not debatable

Three pairs from the Tech debate team made it to the quarterfinals of a tournament that took place at Owensboro Community and Technial College from Nov. 2-5 in Kentucky.

“They did exceptionally well,” coach Jacob Metz said of the teams that consisted of mostly new members.

“Our goals, more than anything else, are on the academic side,” Metz said. “If we aren’t learning from what we are doing, then we aren’t doing our job.”

The debate team attends roughly 10 tournaments a year.  So far this semester, they have attended three.

The next tournament is at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. The tournaments are free events open to the public.

“The 2016-2017 year, was the year that we won the most awards,” Metz said. “That totaled over 100 individuals awards and nine team awards.”

The debate team practices from 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in Henderson Room 004.
