Tech’s Student Government Association sponsored a voter registration drive on Sept. 20 in the lobby of the RUC.

“We are working a voter registration drive just to increase civic engagement within tech and in the Cookeville community,” Averi Cole, SGA representative, said.

The voter registration drive is a part of a statewide competition being conducted by the Secretary of State Tre Hargett.

The university with the highest number of registrations will win a visit and lecture from Hargett. It is all a part of the incentive to get more college students to participate in civic engagement.

Tennessee was ranked 49thin the nation for voter registration, according to a news report in the Tennessean.

“I think it’s really important because I know especially when you’re in high school or starting college that civic engagement isn’t always important; it’s not always enforced as other things so just knowing that you have a role in helping shape your government and shape your community. That’s why it’s really important just to be able to vote in these elections,” said Cole.

SGA scheduled another voter registration drive Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Centennial Plaza.
