Tech women’s track and field team continued their award-winning streak after earning its second Ohio Valley Conference indoor championship Feb. 22.

Coach Wayne Angel also earned the OVC indoor Coach of the Year award for the third consecutive season.

Angel is the first in the league toearn the Coach of the Year title consecutively since Eastern Illinois University’s Tom Akers won four in a row from 2009-12.

“I am humbled and honored that my peers in the OVC coaching community acknowledge and appreciate the work that we are doing at Tennessee Tech,” Angel said.

Angelgraduated from the University of Illinois and is now entering his fifth year as coach at Tech.

Sophomore runner Courtney McCowan said Angel is always encouraging the team. She runs the cross-country 5K, and the 800-meter during track season.

“Coach Angel pushes us to be the best athletes that we can be, and he gives us workouts that will challenge us, but he knows what our limits are. We know that we can trust him to make us better athletes,” McCowan said.

Angel said he believes the team’s strength is the quality of the student athletes.

“They are very talented and we ensure accountability and responsibility in our team culture,” Angel said.

McCowan said she enjoys running with her team.

“My team is like my second family, they are always there for me, and they support me constantly. We are always there to lift each other up. I don’t know what I would do without my amazing teammates,” she said.

Tech is scheduled to be on the road this weekend competing in Nashville against Vanderbilt University.
