Two days, 13 events, one Tennessee Tech University. Tech and the Crawford Alumni Center sponsor Wings Up Weekend April 12 and 13 on and around campus.
The events include a performance by the Tech Players club and lunch at the Friday Café among many other things. These events and many others are open to the public.
“Wings Up Weekend is a weekend full of events for all ages, both on the Tennessee Tech campus and in the surrounding community,” said Brandon Boyd, director of the Crawford Alumni Center. “And while we hope many of our alumni will choose to participate, these events aren’t reserved just for Tech alumni. Anyone in the community is welcome. From the International Baja SAE Competition, to Safari Saturday at the STEM Center, to baseball games and performances at the Backdoor Playhouse and Window on the World, there really is something for everyone.”
Now in its 64thyear at Tech, the Tech Players club offers those who enjoy theater to participate in and watch performances. Having already performed “Frankenstein”and “Pluto” this season, the Tech Players club ends its season with “The Rivals.” Performances end this Saturday. For Tech students, admission is $5.
“The play is called ‘The Rivals.’ It’s a comedy. The playwright’s name is Richard Brinsley Sheridan. It’s a comedy from the 18thcentury, so it was kind of a post Shakespeare. It’s a very funny play about the romantic entanglements of Miss Lydia Languish and her beau Captain Absolute. It’s got very funny characters and funny situations …” said Mark Creter, Backdoor Playhouse artistic director.
On April 12 at noon, the School of Human Ecologyoffers its weekly Friday Café. Run entirely by students, guests are waited on and served like a typical sit-down restaurant. The April 12 menu includes stuffed wontons with apricot sauce, thin sliced beef over seasoned rice and sticky rice cakes. A single meal costs $8.
“Friday Café is a part of HEC 3240 Quantity Food course. This course is a management course including menu planning, recipe standardization, procurement, food safety and sanitation and food costing,” said Dr. Sungpo Yi, who teaches the class. “Each student is in charge of each week’s cafe operation. In this semester, we are covering different menus from across the country. The theme is ‘A Fork in the Road Tasting America.’”

- International Baja SAE Competition, April 11-14. Breakfast, registration and inspection begin at 8:00 a.m. at Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion.
- Alumni Awards Banquet, April 12. It will be held at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of Roaden University Center.
- Engineering Golf Tournament, April 12. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. at the Tennessee Tech golf course.
- Friday Café, April 12. It will be held in Oakley Hall room 005 at 12 p.m. Reservation required.
- Law and Ethics in Nursing and Healthcare, April 12. It will be held in Bell Hall room 282 from 2-5 p.m. The cost is $35.
- “The Rivals”, April 12-13. It will be held at the Backdoor Playhouse in Jere Whitson Building on April 12 at 8 p.m. and April 13 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
- Golden Eagles baseball games, April 12-13. The games will be played at the Tech baseball field at 6 p.m. on April 12 and 2 p.m. on April 13.
- Window on the World, April 12-13. On April 12, the event will be held in Johnson Hall Auditorium from 9-10 a.m. followed by lunch in Roaden University Center’s Noble Cody Suite Dining room at 11:30 a.m. On April 13, it will be held in the Hooper Eblen Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Cookeville History Hike, April 13. The hike will begin at the Cookeville Depot Museum at 10:30 a.m.
- Multicultural Affairs Alumni Advisory Council Legacy Gala, April 13. The Gala will be held in Roaden University Center’s Multipurpose Room at 5:45 p.m.
- Nursing reunion, April 13. The event will begin with a reception at 4 p.m. in Bell Hall room 260. Dinner will follow at 6 p.m.
- ROTC Golf Scramble, April 13. The scramble will be held at the White Plains Golf Course at 7 a.m.
- STEM Center’s Safari Saturday: “Rockin’ Robots,” April 13. The event is held in Ray Morris Hall of Millard Oakley STEM Center. Registration required.
