Film on Eve Ensler to be shown

A free showing of the film “Until the Violence Stops” will be held at 7p.m. on Feb. 26 at the Backdoor Playhouse with a discussion session to follow.”Until the Violence Stops” profiles playwright Eve Ensler and the growth of her play, “The Vagina Monologues” into an international movement called V-Day that promotes an end to violence against women and girls. The film also tells the intimate stories of women from all over the world, revealing their traumatic experiences with cultural expectation and abuse.

“I saw ‘The Vagina Monologues’ here at Tech two years ago and was impressed with the way its energy permeated the room,” Women’s Center secretary Diana Lalani said. “The play evoked laughter, tears and recognition.

“I went with a group of women and the conversations afterwards were touching and revealing.”

The viewing inspired Lalani and the Women’s Center staff to work with Mark Creter in his production of “The Vagina Monologues” to bring further V-Day events to campus.

“The play sparked a movement and that is what this film documents,” Lalani said. “It is touching and inspiring and the V-Day planning group behind this benefit production wants to build on the excitement of the play and offer students a way to channel the play’s momentum.”

“Until The Violence Stops” premiered in 2004 at the Sundance Film Festival, and has won multiple awards since.
