German Club invites students to celebrate Oktoberfest

The Tech German Club will be sponsoring an Oktoberfest celebration and fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 1 in South Hall, Room 205.”Oktoberfest,” according to German professor, Julia Baker, “is the event the most Americans know about and try to recreate here.” Celebrated all over the U.S., large festivals are held in Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky each year.

Oktoberfest is a German cultural event that began in 1810. It started with the celebration of the royal wedding of the Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in Munich. This year, Germany will celebrate its 176th Oktoberfest. Traditionally, the festival last 16 days from late September to early October. It is the largest festival in the world and is riddled with carousels, roller coasters, food, and beer.

The Tech German Club will be recreating Oktoberfest here in Cookeville. Traditional German cuisine will be served.

Tickets, priced at $5 for students and $7 for non-students, are on sale now. They can be purchased from members of the German Club or at the Foreign Language Department office.

The proceeds from ticket sales will go to the American Red Cross charity. The German Club needs to know how much food to prepare so it is asking that tickets be purchased in advance and will not sell tickets at the door.
