Traveling with August Creter: St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin

One of the first things you are told leading up to St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin is that you will be disappointed and it will not live up to your expectations.

During this holiday weekend, Dublin is rampant with tourists from around the world, with many from the US. This means normally accessible bars and restaurants are much busier than usual, but luckily for me, the weekend was full of friendship and high spirits.

Thankfully, this was not my experience. Not only did I get to spend this time with my friends in Dublin, but also my parents who coincidentally visited during this busy weekend.

During St. Patrick’s weekend, Dublin is known specifically for three things: the tourists, the parade and the drinks. The parade itself embodies all of these – a hodgepodge of floats and locals with a crowd full of drunk tourists, truly a sight to behold.

The Irish pride was strong when touring the Guinness Storehouse, formerly the main Guinness factory in Dublin, on St. Patrick’s Day. I had toured there before, but it only felt right to celebrate this holiday with the purest Guinness in the world.

While bars were a bit challenging to get into that evening, our group consistently made it work, allowing ourselves to have a lively evening, and weekend as a whole.

From bouncing back and forth between Temple Bar and Camden Street, to the Guinness Storehouse and the Book of Kells experience, St. Patrick’s weekend was among my most eventful weekends yet in Dublin.
