Country music singers Darryl Worley and Joe Diffie wrapped up Homecoming Week Saturday when they played for over 1,000 fans and alumni at the Hooper Eblen Center.
Compugeeks President Charles Bell put on the show with help from alumni director Tracey Duncan. Bell, who founded the Sparta-based company, used the show as a way to launch the Geekbox, a portable speaker he designed and developed.
“It was an amazing show for those who missed it,” Duncan said. “I am so proud that Tech has been able to bring these well-known artists to campus for students, alumni, and residents of this college town. I hope we can continue doing this, especially during Homecoming Week.”
Darryl Worley, best known for his song “Have You Forgotten?,” took the stage first. After his 45-minute performance, a meet and greet with both Worley and Diffie took place for those fans lucky enough to get a pass. Although many of the fans tried to talk and get autographs from the performers, organizers of the event were forced to limit participants to one photo, due to time constraints.
Joe Diffie took the stage after the meet-and-greet. Diffie performed all his well-known hits, including “John Deere Green.”
“I was very excited for Joe Diffie,” said Shawn Sherman, a Sparta resident who attended the concert with his family. “I think it’s great for the area and the University to have two popular acts come to town, and I really hope the Geekbox Jam returns next year.”
